Do not replace the leaf calendar with another automatic rule. Use safe observations to answer three narrower questions: Is material accumulating? Is water moving through the visible path? Has anything changed? Those answers can support monitoring, cleaning, an accessible downspout review, or a repair or roof-condition conversation.

Count debris paths, not just trees

Low tree cover is only one input. Roof grit and light material can move down the roof, concentrate at a valley, and reach the gutter outlet even when no large tree overhangs the house. The image shows possible paths, not the condition of a specific property.

Start with the route material would take, not a guess about how often the gutter “should” be cleaned.

  • Roof surface: On an asphalt-shingle roof, loose mineral granules may move toward the gutter with runoff. Record the amount and whether it appears to be changing.

Treat shingle grit as a clue, not a diagnosis

GAF’s current residential roof FAQ names gutters as one place where shingle granules may be found. Its steep-slope field guide also explains that natural weathering and extra granules on newer shingles can produce some shedding.

That makes granules useful evidence, but not a remote verdict. Record:

  • whether the roof is asphalt shingle or another known material;
  • whether roof replacement or repair happened recently;
  • whether the amount looks light, concentrated, sudden, or increasing;
  • which gutter run or downspout receives it;
  • whether the roof also shows a visible change from safe ground level;
  • whether flow symptoms occur in the same place.

Do not ask a gutter photo to determine roof life, storm damage, warranty coverage, or the correct repair. A sudden or apparently excessive change belongs in a roof-condition conversation; ordinary-looking grit can still be removed as part of an agreed gutter scope when it is accumulating.

Watch the full path during a safe rain
